Depends on your plan.
The problem with the soviet T1 is that this is a very offensive and situational tier.
Penals : rush peoples, burn them
Sniper : force the ennemy to engage you/counter MG
Car : fast attack, burn them sooner
Another problem with the tier 1 is that it scales very badly with the late game, where teamgames tend to focus. The units produced dies very (very) easily and are very vulnerable to explosions (which tend to be quite frequent in the lategame).
Likewise, if you compare the conscript with the penals, you can notice several things :
Both cost the same and are anti infantery at the begining, the penal beeing twice more deadly at close range and the cons beeing more resistant and deadly at long range.
If you add upgrades, the penal become even more deadly at close range and the cons become more polyvalent (Atgrenades, molotov, ppsh, ptrs).
As the game progress, penals will die faster and faster and conscripts will still have theyr uses, capping an throwing grenades.
The tier 2 on the other hand is a necessity in teamgame.
Sooner or later you ll need a PAK or two (or three) and maxims are useful from the begining to the end.
So
In teamgames, unless you have a very specific plan in mind for the earlygame, soviets players tend to skip T1 and focus on the more generalist and resilient units of the tier2.
Thanks! I thought it was a very important question in the new patch but it seems that it is actually not a question at all esp for 4v4 games. I think another exception is that you are flying with friends who know each other very well and then one can go for T1 for variety. But it seems that for automatch its saver to go for cons + T2.
For conscripts, I guess AT nades is always a must but how about medic and molotov? And when do you guys upgrade it in the new patch??? Also I used to love PPSH but I read from somewhere that no-PPSH helps to maintain conscripts mid-range DPS. How do you guys choose?
For T2, do you guys get the standard 82mm mortor? Or should get the commander with 120mm instead? |
I finally got to finish panthers with the use of AT nades, AT guns, SU76 and &34-85 and most importantly marked vehicle.
Feel really good to see that the player could not manage to save his vet2 panther (though I lost my vet2 su76)!
Maybe I am new in PvP, it seems that losing a panther is a disaster to Axis player as they surrendered after that (also i pushed with conscripts, M5 and t-34-85s.

Since the new patch has decreased the cost for building T1 and T2. Do you guys go for only one, or prefer to go for both?
I usually play 4v4 and to me T2 is a must for most of the maps - ZiS and Maxim. But I must admit that I quite like Penals for their AI capacity. But if I go for T1, I only go for Penals - seldom have snipers, and never make the scout car.
What do you guys choose and most importantly how to make the use of T1 and T2 better with conscripts?

So, you got 2 medium generalist tanks against 3 dedicated tank busting units.
The T34/85 is far from sad. I'd say it's the best soviet tank after the IS-2.
How it fares against infantry is 90% dependent on the terrain, which is a bummer, but if you learn how and where the shots will land you'll have a different experience.
Can you elaborate more on the terrain issue?
Just want to see if anyone here finds that T34/76 is still worth producing. If yes, under what circumstances? |
Thanks everyone. Actually I am new but not that new. Since the game was out, I have been playing PvE online, 2v2 / 3v3 / 4v4. I have recently started to play PvP cause I think I should try something new.I understand what you are saying - I should let my cons to wait for my armors tgt instead of letting them go seperately. and I only had 2 cons to support the tanks (i thought the combination of IS2, KV8 and SU76 can really finish off everything, the other side must think what a noob I was XD). And the game changed immediately after I have lost all my armors in 1 - 2 minutes.
RE: T-34-76
This is worth another discussion! IMO, T-34-76's performance is getting worse and worse in every single patch. I remember I tried spamming T-34-76 in a 3v3 PvE game and put all my bulletins on it (+pen, +RoF and +armor). I remember that I used 2 T-34-76 to try to finish off 1 Pz4. And I could not. I am very sure that it was not a micro problem but a RNG problem and the poor performance of T-34-76. It just cannot pen even Pz4 effectively and its too fragile. Yes it is fast and can flank but I find it too unreliable. I can imagine that the situation will only be worse in PvP - shrecks and mines will finish T-34-76 easily. Now T-34-76 is moved to T4 and there is no buffer time for vetting them like what it could do in the past. Spending 100 fuel on it is just too risky, as it cant do a proper join in both AI and AT. (I love SU76 and M5 and they can do their job really well)
One of the reason for me to keep playing Soviet is that I like T-34. But in COH2 the role that T-34-76 plays is really disappointing to me. I definitely will go for T-34-85 or just spam su76s + M5 Quad. |
su-76s, at nades, zis
you can tech to su85s but its an overkill imo.
Thanks. So to you it is perfectly fine to go with only SU76s with Zis and nades, without IS 2 and SU85s and T-34-85 at all? |
Support your tank destroyers with mines and conscripts. You will (eventually) notice, that the moment you move your conscripts towards a tank, the tank starts moving backwards, and there is a reason for that: a tank with a destroyed engine is a dead tank.
Thanks. Ya I know that because even PvE comps like to throw AT nades. How many cons do you usually use to support armor advance? I think my mistake was that the infantry and the armors were seperated. Cons reached the frontline too early and need to retreat before my armors can reach. Then when my armors have reached my cons were gone alr.
How do you use mines and AT guns to attack? I usually use mines and AT guns for defensive purpose only. |
It's ok to make a vehicle or two from T3 but investing in it too much will make your t4 and first 34/85 come a little too late, but the build for me (I'm a off meta player) goes something like this: 5 cons (somethimes 6 depending on the map and gamemode) -> t2 -> 1-2 atguns -> t3 Su76 or T70 depending IF i need one of them -> T4 -> T34/85 -> 2x Su85s -> T34/85
This build order is a hard one to pull off since it bleeds a shit ton of manpower
Thanks! For T3 I have a question, is T70 really needed if I have plenty of conscripts and Maxims to do AI? I know that T70 is a decent AI light tank but it is really too fragile. And its countered so badly by Ostheer T3/ Shrecks/ Puma/ Pak 40. What makes you go for a T70 instead of a M5 Quad if you are looking for AI? Esp if I reply on cons to do recon.
And is it a good idea to totally depend on Penals instead of Cons? The cost is similar, while Penals AI is way better. But they dont have AT nades. |
Since you said that you like Advanced Warfare...
Going straight for T4 and making 2 T34/85s and 2 Su85s counters pretty much all the armor, T34/85s to flank and block the movement of the opposing tanks while the Su85s deal all the dmg
Thanks! Will try this in the next play. But if it is a heavy T4 route, will it mean that I cannot invest too much on T3? Highly likely it will be conscripts> T2 (Maxim and Zis) >T3 (nothing)> T4 (T34-85 + SU85)?
BTW in this new patch, does it make sense to go for both T1 (for penals) + T2? I always want to give sniper a try but I just prefer having squads instead of mananging a single (or 2) snipers. |
2 SU76s are more than enough to counter a panther with sufficient micro, when you use them as kiting tools (meaning keep them at max range, so that panther can't close in, but you can continuously fire at the panther). Especially when you have an IS2 to soak up the damage, you might lose the IS2, but you should be able to take out at least the panther if you focus fire on one target.
When attacking an OKW base, try to just use your SU76s at a distance attacking ground where the HQ is, or spotting with infantry.
Thanks. But is that IS 2 a must? Or is that any other good ones like T34-85 that can stay at the frontline soaking up the damage while SU76s keep shooting. YTD I did focus fire on the Panther - the major mistake was that I put the 2 SU76s together so they got pass by the Panther at the same time and cannot react.
Just wondering if T34-85 will actually do a better job as main armor, instead of relying on a single IS2 supported by SU76s. I like ISU 152 but I think for my current PvP skills and experience it will get destroyed very quickly.
After the first match I played 4v4 as OKW in the same map. Won with ease - the Panther + Volks blob + support gun can handle almost all situation... SIGH |
