I am against mirror matches in Ladder, ONE HUNDRED PERCENT. No this cannot be allowed. In custom games I could not care less, but NOT in ladder.

I don't know how you can possibly put LoL and "cannot have a competitive environment" in the same phrase, it just doesn't make any sense.

The only thing making competition is money. Football games aren't fair. Some teams invest much more money to get better. They pay to win. The only required thing to have competition is people willing to compete, and others who enjoy watching, attracking sponsors, and making money. And lastly people to organize said competitions.

There are two ideas of "competitive" at work here. One is the same as "professional." In that sense you're right. LoL can have a pro gaming scene and so can football. So CoH 2 could definitely have a pro gaming scene even with pay to win intelligence bulletins because pros would either just buy them or play a lot.

Another meaning of "competitive" is "playing to win." When I play an RTS online, for instance, I play to win. I don't play compstomps and I don't play 2 hour long "throw artillery at each other to watch the pretty explosions" matches on The Scheldt. I play to beat the opponent with skill (and NOT with money or with hours played). So if I lose a game because the other player is using some 10% damage bonus that they have not because they're better but because they're richer or they're a high school kid with more free time than me, this isn't what I want out of my competitive game. It's not competition: it's their wallet/free time vs. mine.

It would be cool if CoH 2 were competitive in the first sense, but I don't think any of us believe that Relic would ever make an RTS good enough to actually support a pro gaming scene in any sense other than a few people winning a few hundred dollars at some tournaments every once in a while.

Relic COULD make a game that's competitive in the second sense, though. At least until ToV, CoH was competitive like this. No money or grinding to unlock any bonuses. Basically every good RTS is competitive in this second sense. And I want CoH 2 to be competitive in this second sense.

I have a shitton of Men of War videos on my YouTube channel because the game is awesome. It's not a game for realism buffs - it's way more realistic than Company of Heroes but Company of Heroes has zero realism so that doesn't mean much. The most realistic thing about the game is tank combat - tanks don't have health bars, they just have treads, engines, turrets, and guns that can be damaged or destroyed as long as the shells pierce the armor, and shells piercing the armor is calculated based on caliber, speed, angle of impact, and armor thickness rather than on some abstract number. The infantry combat is unrealistic but still more realistic than CoH: a machinegun will cut down an entire squad in a few seconds if they're out in the open, for instance, and a couple rifle shots will kill most people.

Basically the best parts of Men of War are the wide variety of tactics you can use because you have so much freedom in what units you buy, the excitement of utilizing your units to pull off really impressive stuff, the thrill of improvising on the fly by picking up a bazooka that an enemy dropped, using it to kill an armored car, grabbing a machinegun from the armored car, fighting off the enemy squad coming your way, grabbing dynamite from the armored car to blow up a nearby tank, then repairing the armored car, crewing it with your own men, and driving away.

The worst parts of Men of War are that it takes a little while to learn the UI, you have to be better at microing than in CoH because you have more men to control (you can control individual men instead of just squads like in CoH), and it can be frustrating if you suck at the game like I do because it doesn't hold your hand: entire squads can die in a few seconds and tanks can get knocked out in one shot if you're stupid.

I recommend it to pretty much everyone who enjoys RTS games, WW2, or games with men in them. I'd say totally buy it in the upcoming Steam Christmas sale if you're at all interested. Buy Assault Squad for multiplayer, but if you like single player or coop, the original Men of War is really really fun with a friend.

I think mirror matches are a good thing. They might tend to be more boring depending on how well factions are balanced against themselves, but that's the only real issue - I don't care about historical accuracy (guess what: the only thing historically accurate about CoH is that it's based on an actual war and uses equipment that for the most part existed, at least in small numbers).

Mirror matches are typically the most boring to watch in Starcraft but they're still enjoyable, and like 12azor says, being able to balance a tournament in a better way than giving someone the choice of faction on a BO3 is a good thing.
