My trusted old 5850 isn't up to the task anymore, so I need an upgrade.
I've more or less decided on a Radeon 7970, but I'm unsure about mobo and CPU.
CoH2 is easily the biggest resource hog among the few games I play, and since I'm not going to buy more than one GPU, I will be GPU bound in any case, so I'm wondering whether the I3-3240 would be sufficient for my needs or if I should go for the I5-3570; there's ~150USD difference here in Denmark.
Which mobo would you recommend for either, considering that I probably won't bother with OC?

i3's are not sufficient for gaming at all. i5's are great though.
Might as well go Haswell since Ivy Bridge is no longer the latest and greatest.

i3s are so sufficient for gaming it's not even funny. I have an i3-2120 in my computer right now and I play whatever games I want on max settings.

That's my feeling as well; based on my experience at least, I've rarely seen a game use more than 30-40% cpu on a 'balanced' system.
What GPU do you have?
Budwise, can you elaborate a bit on why you think the I3 is insufficient?

If you're cool with 20FPS drop compared to an i5, sure they'll work.
The lower-end Athlon II X4 quad-cores are useless in this game, as are the dual-core parts including the Core i3-3220. As is often the case, the Core i7 and Core i5 processors appear to be the best choices, though the FX-8350 does hold its own.

I have everything turned to maximum at 1920 x 1080 in CoH 2 and my FPS is fine. The only reason things look so bad in the benchmark is because Relic's CoH 2 benchmark eats computers for breakfast.

the problem with the i3 is it's cost efficiency, i'd opt for an i5 too if you want to go intel.

if your planning to upgrade go Haswell and:

This is my current set up and I am VERY pleased, I also went for a GTX 780 - not because its the most cost effective but because I wanted one of the best single GPU´s and I could afford it.
If you want a good GPU then a GTX 770 is a very good but if you get some bundle with the 7970 then they are very similar.

Anyone genuinely on a budget would do well to take a look at the Intel Pentium range.
You can get a Haswell G3430 Dual core @ 3.3GHz for ~ E75 from SCAN.
Further down the range you can get 3Ghz for ~E50. If it doesn't work out it's easy to add an i5 later when you have more money.
Pentiums should really be called i1 because they bear the same relationship to the i3 as the i5 does to the i7. They are substantially the same except they don't have the, pretty useless really, Hyperthreading.
If you look at Bud's charts (post #7) you will see that the i3 would be no problem running all games except maybe CoH2. Even then anything over 30fps is certainly playable.
The figure for i3 on CoH does look like something of an anomaly. Either CoH2 is remarkably well optimised for multi threading or the test is artificially designed.
I bought a £50 T series (low power - 35W) Pentium @ 2.6GHz last year to build a totally silent box for DAW applications and have been amazed how much work it gets through and how responsive it is. Even compared to my main unlocked i7 rig.

Intel OC > AMD OC any day. I used to watercool and build chillers and all that shit and I've done both AMD and Intel.
I'd put much more faith into legit review sites than some kid on Youtube. In reality once you open the bottleneck that the CPU has on the GPU it doesnt matter how much faster you get, the GPU will still put out the same FPS. A dual core however IS a bottleneck. Comparing 6 Core AMD's overclocked vs Intel doesnt matter as neither will bottleneck.
