Giving Driver Squads Slot Items From Start?

I'm trying to add a single SMG as a slot item to tank crews through a squad_action_apply, but it seems this doesn't execute since the crew spawns inside the vehicle. I've given thought on making another entity with an SMG weapon, but I prefer it to be specifically a slot weapon, so other members will pick it up when the wielder dies. Is there another way to force a slot item onto them as soon as they come out?

This is an example of the US vehicle crew with 1 bazooka. It adds the weapon to each squadmember, but with the requirement of max 1 bazooka in the squad:

EDIT: This is added in the ebps/action_apply_ext.

What SneakEye said, basically.

Note that I have seen the M20 crew bug occasionally when recrewing MGs, etc.

A possible workaround that -might- work (I haven't tried it) is the following:
- Give a requirement action on the sbps for the squad
- The requirement is for your squad to start moving
- Once the squad moves, you should add a slot item

You should probably make this a fire and forget action and, possibly no-retrigger; you only want this to execute once.
