Guys there isn't even a regular RTS "skirmish" or VP game mode in this.

It's only a moba style game mode at launch

Maybe SEGA are going for maximum DLC/MT saturation, by putting game modes behind DLC walls. I'm sure SEGA are going to milk the community dry every possible way they can.

I'm mostly curious as to whether this allowed them to revisit the engine and resolve the somewhat inexplicable lategame performance bottleneck(s).

Yeah, Relic is in the middle of an "identity crisis" and transition period.
SEGA Europe wants Relic to become more like Creative Assembly which eventual will have their own marketing/branding teams to support their games (a growing team). Relic has been trying to grow as well hiring new brand/marketing/analyst people etc.

SEGA Europe moving forward to support community content, content creators, mods etc.

This put the COH franchise and future games in a good spot for new publisher support to build a larger fan base.

Here a cool video from SEGA Europe showing the "new" COH (at 1:30) and Total War streaming studio;

COH got its own Relic brand manager in 2015.

The less visible - but very profitable - part of Valve's revenue: betting & gambling through virtual items in CS: ;:GO

Also don't forget when Relic was acquired by SEGA, it was CA that rebuilt their leadership including the current Relic boss (general manager). So Relic is CAs "little brother".

"We've spent the last few years building a really strong infrastructure at CA. The games are led and supported strongly and we're clear on our aspirations. That allows me some time to take all the learning we've had at CA as we've grown, and apply what's appropriate in Vancouver," he added.

The previous general manager of Relic had left well before the purchase of Relic by Sega, and although there was an executive producer on CoH 2 that was pretty much it. Nobody was leading the studio in a game-centric way from the front.

The studio building idea is good but its a slow progress with growing pains. It took CA several years to get where they are now and the marketing payoff is starting to show now and new dev talent coming in with new games. Unfortunately, Relic is in a much worse position than CA that have a larger fan base and now working with 3 different publishers (343 industries, Wargaming, SEGA Europe).

As I have said on this forum for over a year. COH2s 5 years plan failed financial post-launch.
Now with COH they are trying to backpaddle and find new ways to monetize future games. Multiplayer team games, in general, are much easier to monetize than 1vs1s. Total War: Arena and Halo Wars2 Blitz mode is leading the way with MOBA/RTS hybrids. You can expect future COH games will have new team modes similar to that.

The problem with DOW3 is;
1) Halo Wars 2(cross platform) at least has many different game modes that appeal to different gamers.
2) TW:Arena is free-to-play (published by Wargaming)

Unless they introduce some new game modes, DOW3 will probably kill the series.

i have just finished to read your very interesting post.
thanks for taking time to writte it, it's very well explained.

This said, it's obvious that relic will never ever make another game like COH. the real company behind COH was THQ, now with SEGA, they are thinking first at money and after at gameplay.

No wonder why THQ made bankrupt, they had balls to make game with new content and mechancics that were never used before in an other game.
That's how we got COH and even DOW, all claimed as the best RTS when they came out.
Sadly, too much risk can lead to failure ...

Now with SEGA, they can't afford to 'loose' (by loosing, i mean not grabing enough money) so they simply copy another concept and add new skins.

I have watch no more than 5 min of DOW3 gameplay since i alrady decided to don't buy it #LELIC but to me, it looked like it's only a SC2 copy pasta.
They removed most game mechancis from the older DOW, like the cover system

We will see how it works for RELIC and SEGA, wish them good luck :)

after all, there are actually people working there and it would be bad that they fire them because of bad sales.

Before the Relic Police Force get to me, I must advise to not buy this game to save you from the awful multiplayer experience, crap balance, and relic using the same engine as was used for CoH2. I have heard about these issues. :hansREKT:

THQ didn't go out of business because they made CoH have cover mechanics or other innovations in CoH and DoW, they went out of business because they shifted out of primarily making children's licensed games for Disney and others without having a new revenue stream ready to go as a replacement. They then threw themselves into making more adult games which only the Saints Row and Relic games ever paid off for them. They also invested a lot in a WH40K MMO that never launched. Not launching an MMO isn't cheap.

The hired a lot of very high profile game creators and movie directors to make video games that were never completed (at least under THQ). Paying Guillermo del Toro to not make a game isn't cheap.

Relic made some excellent games under THQ but again when I was there they (THQ) fundamentally wanted to be in the business of big AAA console blockbusters.

Under SEGA Relic has a publisher that understands PC gaming better than THQ did at the end and understand the strategy market. Whether you like CoH2 (the only game Relic's released so far under SEGA) is a matter of personal taste. However I would argue that Relic is better off with SEGA than the THQ I worked under.

Edit:

Here's some links to read if you're wanting supporting information. Also I totally forgot the UDraw which was a successful drawing tablet for the Nintendo Wii which was then a not successful drawing tablet for every other platform.

So pissing in the eyes of DoW3 fanants is good understanding of PC gaming? You have 3 types of possible DoW3 customers - 1) DoW series fans 2) New blood 3) Strategy fans.

Right now Relic just fucked up first category of players. By ignoring everything and adding shitty and single gamemode. This is dumb, because old fanbase is the most loyal base.

And simply dont adding VP gamemmode via copy paste is too hard?
