German mechanized doctrine?

Looking at the recent ESL statistics about which commanders were picked most, I was surprised to see "German mechanized" being in 12% of matches. What exactly makes this doctrine good over, say, Mobile defense?

Spotting scopes are great, especially on stugs or 222s. Smoke is handy. And every commander with command tank is top tier one in 1v1.

I guess spotting scopes make it appealing, but I still don't see why I'd chose it over mobile defense, since it also has smoke, command tank and the panic puma.

If you don't need panic puma though you are better off with mechanized, especially on maps like langres or crosssing. A vet 3 222 with spotting scopes pretty much disables the fog of war.

Even better, Vet2 is when they get the vision bonus.
