ASUS P751JF-MS71 799.99 USD
  • Intel Core i7-4712MQ Quad (2.3GHz)
  • 8GB DDR3-1600 RAM
  • 1 TB - 5400 RPM SATA
  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 930M 2GB
  • 17.3" 1600x900

ASUS ROG GL551JW-DS71 999.99 USD
  • Intel Core i7-4720HQ Quad (2.6GHz)
  • 16GB DDR3-1600 RAM
  • 1 TB - 7200 RPM SATA
  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M 2GB
  • 15.6" 1920x1080

Background
I am currently attending an art school for 5 years. I currently have a Samsung Ultrabook, which is already getting in my way because it is soooooooo weak. So I am looking at these two laptops (moderately powerful budget laptops). I am open other suggestions though.

Budget
~$1000 USD max without tax and warranty. Consider a lower middle class person who isn't out on the street but every dollar DOES count for me.

Games I want to play at what setting
  • CoH2 of course, prefereably at max resolution 900p or 1080p, with low to medium settings.
  • Fallout 4, max resolution with low to med settings.
  • MGS5, max rsolution, low setting

As you can see, I do not mind playing at quiet low setting as long as resolution is crisp. I do have a quiet powerful desktop so I just want to be able to play these games at 30+FPS on my laptop.

Conclusion

So I am torn between these two comps. I am aware that laptops get outmoded so quick. So I am wondering if that $200+ is worth it for the DS71 rather than MS71. I could not find any direct comparison between the two G-cards and I am not even sure how much worse 1600x900 is then 1920x1080.

http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-960M.138006.0.html

The DS71 will play games MUCH better than the P751 due to the video card. GTX 930M is pretty low end and the 960M is mid-higher end. 930M you can play some games but at low settings, 960M you can crank up to medium or even high settings depending on the game.

I agree with Budwise on the DS71 if you are choosing between those two.

Slightly better processor, better GPU, twice the RAM.

Why only these two?

I bought myself a new laptop just 2 days ago, so I'm over tons of specifications around your price.

For 3874zł (1022$ / 913euro - tho in USA it's cheaper byt around 150-250$) I bought Lenovo Y50-70.

Aluminium cover, nice design, cool red keyboard backligt with 1 hinge.

i7 4720HQ, GTX 960M (4GB, are you sure about 2? Mine has 4gb), 1TB + 8GB flash, 8GB DDR3 (+ empty slot) and 1920x1080.

But I'm big fan of Lenovo since years so a little fanboy may talk through me :P

But if you want to choose only between 2 above, take the one with 960.

PS
CoH2 is running on max resolution with high/ultra.

There also may be version (this Lenovo) with GTX 860 instead of 960, but the difference between 860 and 960 is about... ~1-5FPS in games. So you won't even notice it if you find something interesting with GTX 860.

960 is 860 but with clock 100mhz higher.

The only thing you may not like, it has only 1 jack slot, which is combo jack, so you need combo headphones or a little cube for classic headsets so you can plug headphones and mic into this cube anf then plugthis cube to laptop.

Like said upstairs Nvidia GeForce GTX 930M is too low for play CoH 2. GTX 960M (or equivalent) is a minimum I think.
Regarding the HDD, 5400RPM is not advice for system disk.
And a definition of 1080p seem to me the minimum nowadays.

Information to know about Lenovo :

Second option is the better one, but you could spend some more time searching for a cheaper alternative that has comparable or even better specs than the 999 dollar machine. Usually a substitute witch different components with similar performance can make a huge price difference!

You can check it on cpuboss. Just write in google something like i5 ..... vs i7 4720HQ and there will be quute good comparasion o the first site of the list.

I had same problem week ago but finally I decided that it's better to get i7 (and pay 100$ more).
Why? Because even if right now I don't need i7, I want to be pleased with my laptop in next 3/4/5 years. i5 won't promise me that, i7 will.

I'm an art student too, (architecture) and i use heavy duty programs like 3ds max and maya, throughout my studies i have had many laptops,i go through them faster than shoes :p.i remember seeing my laptop dying in front of my eyes , literally , not to mention the heat issues .
Quite frankly buying a mid range laptop is a big waste of your money , u'll never get the performance of a desktop yet you have to pay more.
My advice, get a desktop for whatever heavy duty tasks u wanna do and hold on to ur ultra book.
that's what i have done .

Depends, I have an i5 3570k overclocked to 4.5 ghz, beats my friends I7 easily. But every processor chip is different, mine is a great overclocker, but my brother's i5 3570 k is a shit overclocker. Just luck I suppose.

i'm arch, too!

but my school makes it a requirement that arch students have a laptop with graphics card. and it seems like all the later year people seem to have laptops, too.

i do have a powerful desktop but i spend at least 12 hrs in studio everyday and there is already thieving fucks prowling through studios.

i was a laptop gamer for quiet a few years so i am aware of risks and consequences of pushing laptops to the limit.

maintaining your laptop didn't help?

well if u treat ur laptop as if it's a desktop it'll sure live longer, but it makes no sense keeping it on flat surfaces all the time not on beds or not even in ur lap, always walking around with a cooling fan....
Regular maintenance as in removing dust from the air vents and so will eventually make the whole thing fall apart .
i have an i7 hp with 2gb vga as a laptop, but i hardly use it for anything other than 2d cad.

PS: i'm super hyped for fallout 4 as well,i preordered since launch day (most stupid thing i ever done :D) i will definitely play it on max settings

Another question.

My school's IT department only deals with HP or DELL. dunno why.

Is there any comparable laptops with those brands?
