Most of the time when you ask the mortar team to fire smoke they won't. You lose the munis and get a reset counter but no smoke. I think it has to do if they reposition or not, but not sure. Even if facing the intended target they will not smoke the target more than half the time.

i've noticed that too...it's happened to me at the worst of times...

... it got kinda awkward whenever the smoke was supposed to cover an advance in front of a machine gun too...

Long standing bug. Until popular broadcasters start trying to use the ability and expressing frustration, it will most likely remain off the radar.

It's really annoying because there are many times where I want to storm a MG but my mortar won't fire. And it is in fact the only non defensive smoke the Ostheer has to offer (besides the smoke barrage plane which nobody uses).

Officer smoke barrage and Mortar half track smoke barrage are also available to the Wehrmacht.

Figure out a way for CaptainSPrice to abuse it on stream. It's the only way to be sure.

why point out other smoke abilities and it not costing munis???? When I advance on an MG or position that I want covered and I'm moving that way to time the smoke and it doesn't happen....your screwed and the ability cooldown is running so you fire it off to help even if late...that's the point
