Just play the mode you like the most. Strats are not similar in all modes. Who cares about rank anyway. :D

For the beginner its even better if you don't play your first 10 games in tryhard mode. Test different strategies and have fun, if you get placed low in the ladder you will have easier opponents at the beginning so its ok. It works best in 1v1 but if your rank is far from your skill level it will change very soon so it doesn't matter where you land at the beginning. And tbh the matchmaker works fine, just only over rank 1000 mark. If you get higher you will be sometimes matched with much better opponents but it will be ok since you will know enough to learn from it then.

I personally enjoy 1v1 more than anything, but that's the case for all Strategy games.

I just find it's so much more 'focused' I guess, and I don't need to worry about other players being available/skill mis-match etc. That and the games are generally faster, I can't stand hours long games.

Etiher way, playing against humans is day and night vs playing against the AI. In every strategy game I've played, as soon as I start playing against real people I never touch the single player again as it's just too dull. I've never even really touched the single player of any CoH game, just gone straight into MP!

Just play, ask questions, watch replays if you really get into it. Feel free to ask your opponent if you get stuck 'how do I deal with that?' in a polite way. Just say "I haven't seen that before, do you know what I should be doing to beat it?". Most people are helpful and will tell you 'Oh, counter X with Y next time'.

Ask on the forums too, there are a lot of really helpful dudes on here who have good knowledge about the game.

More than enough answers. Maybe this thread should be closed? Though it does have good general info.

Anyways.. Thanx for the feedback ppl. And I have jumped in some 3v3s and watched the replays. I am SO bad at micro!! haha

Just play 1v1 even if you lose play more, i think youll never get better if you just play team games, you played vs ai so you have the fundementals playing 3v3 wont maake you better

Start up automatch and play the game.

By the way, doesnt it get really, REALLY boring to play vs AI? I mean the AI is spamming pointless units like M3's in the lategame, was it really entertaining enough to do it for 2k hours??????

Take the plunge and play 1v1. This has the steepest learning curve of any gamemode, but in my opinion is also by far the most rewarding.

I'll prolly not gonna make many friends with this, but in terms of CoH, 4v4/3v3 is to 1v1 what elementary school is to uni. That is not to say 4v4 cannot be fun or challenging in its own way, but all the subtleties and finesse, the timing and positioning, unit composition and flanking, in short all the stuff that distinguishes the CoH franchise from other RTS games is drowned out by accelerated teching, hordes of heavy tanks, arty and offmap.

1v1 is to 4v4 as masturbating is to sex

No matter how good you are by yourself, it's not interesting until at least one other person is involved

Take the 1v1 step, ofc it's crazy hard to learn the game, but this game has a decent amount of streamers from who you can learn from. Most of them review the game at the same time, really helpful. Back in the day, 2008 when i picked up vcoh, i had no idea how to play the game, i just started from 0 and with time came the knowladge, right now its so much easier. But i also know that it's not the only thing, micro is something that comes with alot of practise.

Just to make a point, play 1v1 and see where it takes you, winning there is really rewarding if you want it to be. :)

Eh, strange analogy, own goal one might say.
That significant other person you are interacting with is indeed your opponent.
In any case, sex is not a team sport.

Watch some of Imperial Dane's casts. You will really learn a lot about strategy, unit composition, specific map details, and so on.

PREPARE FOR MINES BECAUSE AI DON'T USE THEM
ALSO EXPECT HUMANS TO NOT THROW THEIR SQUADS AWAY LIKE MORONS.
Two biggest differences, IMO. Also AI has minimap cheats / maphacks or something.
After those things, just remember it's only game and you don't heff to be mad / nervous / afraid. :D
