A place for some of the more human side of WW2.

I have been unable to find a source but saw this somewhere (certainly people knew who they were fighting):

Wehrmacht soldiers said they could tell who they fought by firing a single round in the direction of the enemy. If the response was well aimed rifle and Bren fire they were facing Commonwealth soldiers. If it was a fusillade of rifle and submachine gun fire, they were facing Russians. If it was Americans there would be silence for several minutes and then the entire area would be obliterated by an airstrike or artillery.
