I think only tournament placements really count here since the leaderboards were mostly full of stathackers

I think people put too much emphasis on ladder play. It's great for practice but for real competition people should play in tournaments.

Symbiosis clearly the best because he's 5-1 against DevM in SNF4 games, and also 3-0'd him to win a WmD tourney. DevM beat him 3-1 in a GR tourney last summer, so overall Symbi is 9/13 in their recent tourney history.
Plus Symbi has won the last two 2v2 tourneys he played in, and a few weeks after the tourney he couldn't play in he beat those winners (Jim+Rainbow) 3-1 in a bo5. One of the elite 1v1 players no doubt, and arguably one of the best 2v2 players ever so overall I don't think its even a contest.

I did not even think about Symbiosis...........
and now thinking about it he has been doing very well - both in 2v2 and 1v1 - But all in all has not DevM been around longer and dominated longer?

Its impossible to pick one player who had been the best over the course of 6 years. And judging by stats, like mentioned above, is pointless.
As an oldschooler I'll just add a few names to those mentioned in previous posts: HeroicCompany, Golradaer, nystrom, DrHorse, Sweix and... 12azor, would you believe it.

SupriseAttack, Situation, Kashll, Hamilton (prolly the best Armor Company player ever), Cannonball (best mg micro), ZeroCrack (Riflespam ftw), CharlesDarwin. Those I can remember atm.

Don't get me wrong. I am not naive enough not to share your concerns over the integrity of the ladder. All the same I would urge anyone with a fighting chance of getting to the top to put in a few games on the good old Quartzal server over the next 2 weeks.
I know most people are more stoked by the imminent prospect of CoH2 but I think we are all going to miss the old server more than we think. I any case it will be the end of an era for CoH fans and it would certainly be nice to be able to celebrate that with someone we all know is legit and worthy to occupy the top position.
Holding a vote might provide a Champion most could agree with but it is always at least partly a popularity contest.
Probably the only other method would have someone go back through all the 'official' tournaments and allocate points for final position.
