I remember watching and playing COH1 and seeing a lot more static artillery being built in that game. Rifle Doctrine would have their howitzer, Brits had Royal Artillery and the Germans had an 88. The players used these artillery options a lot in order to win games.
I haven't seen an ML-120 the entire time I have been playing. I don't know if Germans have their own static artillery piece (maybe ISG? but that's not really big caliber gun), and I am not sure if Americans have their own static howitzer. Sometimes a see a B4 but only if they have the counterattack doctrine. Most games just become infantry + HMGs + AT guns + heavy tanks
What is the deal with this? It would be nice to see some unit variety on the field!! My theory for why this is happening is:
1. A lot of commanders have some sort of bombing run or artillery strike
2. Stuka and Katyusha (kat never built anymore lol) is just better?
What happened to the artillery?

Everyone pretty much hated royal artillery. Getting blown up all game long is not fun, it's a horrible nightmare. Remember creeping barrage? Ugh.
The 88 has basically just been replaced with the pak 43, and you see it every now and then.
Most indirect fire is now mortars or light artillery (scott, pack howitzer, infantry support gun, etc), so you can use it to break through machine guns and bunkers but you can't smash an entire army with it.
I think this is an intentional design decision, and I like it.

Most commanders in vcoh lacked an offmap that could realistically destroy howitzers. A huge number of popular commanders in CoH2 have one that will oneshot them guaranteed. WFA somewhat changed this with the introduction of OKW and their lack of offmap artillery in their best doctrines, and I've had some success making ML-20 against them.
Howitzers cost manpower and fuel in vcoh, here they cost just manpower which is the most valuable resource in the long run and for a unit so easily wiped by offmaps not a particularly good investment.
Light artillery like mortars are FAR more efficient in coh2 than they were in coh1, which makes howitzers less important.

They are not I think a 1v1 thing
More common in team games
Even so they were rare pre-WFA except the B4
Release of WFA meant static high value targets (OKW trucks), hence static on map artillery became sort of useful again
They are still static, fragile, high value targets though, but at least now you can build them in your base and they will be sort of useful

moonchild it doesn't matter if he played only 100 games its enough for him to have a point. ninja don't see many made cuz theyre not good n e more. back when they were good a lot of ppl used them and I never thought they were to op, I thought they were just right. now they need an offensive buff and on top of that they need armor vs offmaps.. especially cheap one like germans 80 muni arty that will break the gun. it should atleast decrew it and leave gun at 40%
