GPU Recommendation

Hello all,

It seems that CoH2 has problems with the Radeon 4xxx series. I am running a Radeon 4850HD (or something like that) currently and get frequent crashing. My rig would be considered old but that's ok.

My current rig: Q9550 quad core intel and 4 gigs of ram. GA-EP45-UD3P mobo, 650watt PSU.

I'm going to add more ram to bring it up to 8 but I would like a recommendation on a card that would not break the bank and would give me better performance and more importantly stability. Something that would work well with my "outdated" parts.

Any thoughts are much appreciated. And btw CoH2 is the only game I play, somtimes CS:Go but other than that no other games so accounting for other game performance is not important.

Thank you

There is always a sweet spot on used cards price/performance.

I believe right now the best deal that can be had is on a used hd7950 or 7970. You absolutely can't get a better deal than one of those cards for $150 or on occasion even less.

Best deals are on ebay.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/GeForce-Graphics-Express-6008MHz-Surround/dp/B007ZO7T9E - Really nice, high end GPU which - when paired with a decent processor and RAM (Minimum you need is about 4 GB) - can run both CS:GO and COH 2 at ultra settings extremely smoothly. Very expensive however.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Radeon-Graphics-PCI-Express-GDDR5-Dust-proof/dp/B004XANO24 - GPU I currently use. Extremely cheap (relatively speaking) graphics card although absolutely exceptional for its cost. I can run most modern games at about medium quality before lag begins to set in. COH 2 runs virtually flawlessly without any lag in all game sizes at around low quality. I can't make great use of the GPU though because I don't have an exceptional processor but it's still a pretty great GPU.

I am using Gtx 780 and it runs the game smoothly on max settings.
Dont go for anything below it, it still has the old architecture in it.
Also, bear in mind that coh2 is heavy on the CPU!

Wow guys, thanks for all the help! This is exactly the kind of info I was looking for.

I should have mentioned this in my initial post but I'm looking in the 150$ new range but am considering buying used via ebay for cards that were once top notch but their prices have come way down.

Another thing.

I read that CoH2 only uses 2gigs of ram because it's a 32bit app. Is this correct? I am on a 64bit OS so would upgrading my ram to 8gigs make a difference in performance?

Thanks a lot!

7950 for +/- $100 on ebay is a steal if you want to do it on the cheap.

Try to stretch for a 270x if possible. Personally wouldn't go any lower since you lose a lot of power from that point downwards. http://www.anandtech.com/bench/GPU14/857

If only this game had - I don't know - SLI or CROSSFIRE ability.

You can Xfire 2 7950s for less than $200 and have more GPU horses than a 780Ti.

Is anybody really using 2 GPU's ?I always thought it would be a great idea and considered doing it. But then you have higher power consumption + Frame erros a.k.a micro stuttering.

The 7950 is essentially the same card as the 270x, except you save about $90.

I personally would spend about $140-150 on a 7970 and be done with it.

Micro stutter is what you're referring to - and that's pretty much gone - though it is game dependent.

The "modern" GPU's are pretty good on PSU's - I've known guys running dual 7970's on 850W PSU's with no trouble at all.

The problem with COH2 and dual GPU's is simply that COH2 doesn't support dual graphics cards - which is just simply unacceptable for a modern title.

In regards to 270's and 280's - they're rebadged 7950's and 7970's accordingly. The great part of the 7970 and even more so the 7950 is the overclocking ability - you can get a LOT of bang for the buck with those cards.

Dual 7950's for under $200 is ridiculous for the performance you'll get.

I'm leaning towards a 7950, any brands that are better than others? I'm thinking of the sapphire brand. Also, my PSU is a 650 EA-650 Earthwatts. From what I read this can handle the card but if any of you experts feel otherwise I would love to hear your opinions. Thanks.

Brands are pretty meaningless on reference model cards (or even non-reference models)

Also, your PSU will be just fine.

7950 is a great choice, should give you a good run!

The 7950 is a great chip - you won't have any problems with it at all - they easily overclock to 7970 speeds too.

That said - IF you can - get a better than reference cooler, the best of the 7950's coolers were the Gigabytes, but the MSI Frozen was good too. I believe the ASUS was also a sweet one.

The standard reference 7950's go for $90 on ebay now, the better cooler ones a little more ($110-$130).
