First, what's your budget? What's its intended purpose? What do you use it for? What games do you play? What sort of resolution are you playing at? When do you need to uppgrade?

Second, as far as generally speaking, every time you want to upgrade your processor, you'll have to upgrade your motherboard, because the socket is incompatible and its features are outdated.

Third, generally speaking as a whole build (including case, HDD, etc), and building computers from the USA, Intel builds start to shine above $800 USD.

Fourth, check out http://www.logicalincrements.com/ and http://www.pcpartpicker.com for inspiration.

For a general gaming rig, say an i5 Haswell + 8GB ram + Nvidia 760/770 or ATI R9280x would be adequate.

Currently I am using my PC for every kind of game from World of Tanks to Battlefield 4 to Anno 1701... I have 8GB of Ram and an AMD Processor with 3,6 GhZ and the Radeon R9 270x... Budget doesn't matter that much, but I'd say about 1000 Euros :)

Save yourself a lot of reading and speculation. Either PM (or get someone who knows him, to contact) Budwise. He is knowledgeable about these types of matters.

AMD's CPUs beat Intel's on multitasking and working with video making stuff. Intel is vice versa. Intel beats AMD in gaming (a bit) but the AMD CPU's are much cheaper and offer as much as power as their Intel counter-parts.Here is the list of parts that i reccomend for you: http://de.pcpartpicker.com/p/d9Pvqs
P.S I included a very good CPU cooler!

They dont offer the same durability and power, certainly not for gaming and streaming. The virtual cores of AMD are not worth much. Just go for a 4670K or 3570. Dont go for the 8350.

For choosing CPU, if it is for gaming, AMD is out of consideration at the first second. Any i5 CPU is fine, but Watch Dog start breaking this requirement.

For GPU, they are quite equal, it was like you better research the games you have favouring which company. For example, Lara Croft, COH2, BF4 are favouring ATI. Watch Dog is favouring Nvidia. You can expect two cards, same budget, from these 2 company, would have a 20~25% better performance in the game they favouring, but the other company will keep up after months.

For RAM, there is only one game currently that really devouring and may require 16 GB, that's Watch Dog.

Kronsaur0s, kreatiir and Porygon, my list is more of a gaming/video editing stuff (didn't knew the what will He use it for) If only for gaming, then consider this list: http://de.pcpartpicker.com/p/NcWK23
P.S There is kind of a problem, We don't know your what is your motherboard and can it support the RAM or the CPU. This is very important! If you don't know how to check it, use Crucial Scanner, it will say your motherboard model, company and etc. There will also be how much RAM it supports and how much slots there are for RAM. And finnally, We don't know Your power supply's wattage. THIS IS VERY, VERY IMPORTANT!!!!! If the parts from may list will have too much wattage and Your PSU's (power supply) is not enough. Your expensive parts WILL FRY and will be worth nothing more than an apple. (lol) This may seem like rocket science to You, but We want to help You choose, and choose safely. That's what I wanted to say.
