Back using a P2P connection I couldn't see how it would be possible to implement it without it being a connection burden on one side.

Well, there was nothing technically stopping them from implementing it on the old servers, it just would've meant if the observer lagged everyone else in the game would lag too. But we were told it wouldn't get added until after the move to the new servers, so at least that is out of the way. Same with in-game leaderboards.

But without word from Relic, I wouldn't get your hopes up.

Sounds like it's not going to be a P2P loop. I guess everyone is getting connected to a session hosted on the server?

?
DOW2 had it, and it's a Relic P2P game.
And if an observer is lagging the game, he just leaves it by courtesy for the players.

Relic just didn't take the time to implement it in COH2, that's all.

How does that mode work? I´m just worried this could be abused. Like one player being in Teamspeak with one of the spectators and thus having some kind of maphack.

because it operates through a server they can just send delayed packets.

basically dota style. :D

if they choose to implement it that way anyways.

I hope they will add such mode to COH1 too, since they are going to add battle servers there as well :)

I'm sure you can't just join a random game. You would either have to be invited or accepted to join. Perhaps a game could be set to "Observable" in the lobby.

It's important to clarify that this is a potential new feature, not a promise for a new feature.

Edit: I'm not saying either way, I just want to avoid a situation where 9 months from now people are linking to this thread saying we lied.

Good to know one of the most requested features and one of the reasons many people are upset about this game is being "considered." MVGame

It's certainly a much requested feature here. It's not a priority for every user though.

I doubt the majority of players request an observer mode when they could be playing instead.

Well, it's kinda silly to say "Hey, this is possible now!" when it was entirely possible before. And it isn't a feature that the compstomp crowd cares about, so I doubt it's a priority for the development team.

*cough*

"it's possible now, we might implement it."

that phrase is applicable to pretty much any feature... i wouldn't get my hopes up just yet.
