Problem solved, howitzer retains a unique profile distinct from the mortar and keeps a role of long range area denial while no longer being a no-micro-required bleed machine.
If autofire goes, however, which it should, either veterancy or the barrage or both do need to be buffed. That should be clear.
The only alternative is turning this thing into a isg clone with laser beam accuracy and pathetic AoE, but at that point it would really just be an inferior and more expensive isg.
The Scott on the other hand I have never seen really be an issue. Remove the panic smoke canisters and see where things go from there? Do people spam this in team games or something?

Double Scott + Double Jackson + bar blobs is the standard USF 2v2 strategy. If needed a 3rd Jackson can be added with pop cap abuse. Or even Pershing, Calliope added to the mix.

reworking the pack howie (and probably the isg) to be barrage only is an interesting solution indeed and i'd like to test how that pans out. that would at least be better than further neutering its performance to the point it offers nothing over the t0 mortar anymore

Evidently the last patch did not address the pak and scott counter difficulty.
As said, the slight delay nerf just allows for quick repositioning. You need to be really quick. Otherwise the 2 still drain mp and health like water! From far reach! Same frustration as 60TD!
pak howie you need to tech up stuka to have a good chance to counter it. Suggestion is to make it like land mattress, it can be destroyed by tanks instead of decrew.
Scott is just blatant cost efficient bleeder, especially if Wehr player. Bascially a vet3 pak howie on a stuart body.
Yes remove smoke for start. Increase pop to same as pwafer.

If I invest in a mortar I should not have to wait for the third or fourth shot of the barrage for it to actually hit anything. It's incredibly frustrating, especially with specialist doctrinal units like 120mm or doctrinal Brit mortar.
You could even bring back the USF light mortar design with substantial buffs to barrage. Kind of make it hit hard, nerf range so it requires just as much micro as an MG with repositioning and packup.
The main gripes with old mortars was not lethality, but more you could set it up behind lines and ignore it while auto fire gave you the odd gren wipe. So basically they required zero micro.

I don't know what kind of idiot would be hit the barrage, but I'm surprised no one would argue against this whining cry.
Obviously the barrage would have to be buffed if the autofire is removed since otherwise the unit is just a complete waste.

Dont bother with supremestefan...he wasnt able to get ullu out of his position with a premade team until all other random players on my side in this matched left....he lost so many stuff vs me...was funny.

This is broken, USF player just randomly wipes my squads and I could do nothing to counter this strategy.
