I'm not even sure why they added vehicle abandons. It makes driving nearer to enemy territory more dangerous and rewards more boring, cautious, campy play styles.

I don't agree. Yes going to the enemies territory unsupported is now more dangerous but for me, it gives an adrenaline rush whenever a vehicle gets abandoned. To quickly destroy it before the enemy gets it or to quickly rush my infantry there for recrewing
It doesn't punish players who support their vehicles, which is a good thing.

It's only an issue when you base rush as you can't get into the base b/c of MG's, which basically rewards more boring, cautious play
In any other circumstance it's just an extra micro step to finish it off before retreating. I say overall it's not a needed mechanic.

True but there is more enemy territory than only his base. And I dont like base rush in general
I can see why its a not needed mechanic in high level play but i like the suspension/tension it brings
