DEBRIEF
The dust settles and the first Beginners' Tournament comes to a close, but out of the swirl of the fog of war emerges Kisiel aka Smoke, victorious after many hours of bloodshed.
Wrap Up
It was fantastic to see the Beginners' Tournament take off so well! We had action from all fronts of Europe and only the strongest made it through to the finals. There were Tigers rolling across the fields of Angoville, Stukas strafing the streets of Arnhem and KV8s scorching the soldiers of Semoskiy Winter with flames. The tournament provided entertainment for over 40 players, as well as hundreds of viewers on the stream.
For most of the participants, it was a step into the world of 1v1 and for those used to team games, it can be safely said that they were slightly shocked at not having their team around to help. But everyone was tenacious, the battles fought were long and hard and went down to the last man; for that reason, we find it hard to fault any of the participants. You all did your very best to secure your places and we may yet see you in future tournaments. So, a big thank you to all those who signed up!
The main event on Saturday really separated the cream from the crop. During the finals on Sunday, we saw the remaining players, Kisiel aka Smoke, Warfarers Primarch aka TigerKonigs, PacboyA1 and Dusan fight it out for the number one spot, producing a couple of stellar games of which any player would be proud. We followed these four throughout Sunday and watched as Warfarers Primarch aka TigerKonigs claimed third place vs PacboyA1, Dusan fell a close second and Kisiel aka Smoke emerged victorious, standing tall with a 3:0 victory in the finals.
The Prizes
As stated in the prize pool, the Winner could claim one of the new Commanders and three other Commanders of their choice, with second place allowed two Commanders and third place allowed one; each of the three also won a complementary set of three skins of choice. As the Winner, Kisiel aka Smoke elected generously not to take one of the new commanders and insisted on settling for the three premium OKW doctrines Fortifications, Scavenge and Elite Armoured, whilst Dusan went for Tank Hunter Tactics and Elite Troops with Warfarers Primarch aka TigerKonigs bringing up the rear asking for Mechanised Assault.

The Staff
But who would have known that any of this were happening, if it were not for the casters? After trying to reach others on Saturday, COH2.ORG Senior Caster and Reddit Admin A_E stepped up to the plate, to provide hours of entertainment, searching through the brackets in his quest for interesting matches. He supplied some insight about how the participants might approach the games, as well as an animated commentary, producing an energetic and entertaining stream for all those watching. We even took strategic advice on how best to consume a Weetabix immersed in milk 1v1. He even brought a certain Von Kluge along for the ride to spice up the casts.
Stormless, the COH2.ORG Lead Caster himself, announced that he would head up the stream on Sunday from the semis to the finals. His commentary was top notch and his endurance of ten hours straight streaming, makes him a living legend within this community. We hope we can see more of him in the future.
Last but not at all least, the organiser pays heartfelt thanks to COH2.ORG Referee, The Soldier and COH2.ORG Senior Referee, Somenbjorn, for standing by his side throughout the entire tournament, guiding his actions, whispering words of wisdom into his ear and making sure he never slackened in his duties. These two were steadfast and were most certainly the big unsung heroes of the tournament; just having them there to talk to during the downtime probably kept the organiser from going mad. Some of the best referees anyone could ask for.
The Next Phase
Watch this space for Beginners’ Tournament 2 where we can provide more excitement, lend a hand to more lower level players and iron out some of the inconsistencies that were around in Beginners’ Tournament 1. Next time we’ll be looking to drop the faction picking rules and make the ladder requirements slightly fairer to all involved.
Our aim is to provide an even more efficient and attractive tournament.
