Master League 5 Recap + Master League Update

Last week saw the fifth official Master League tournament come to a close. ML5: The Finals was a smashing success and five weeks of slogging yielded a champion. I don’t want to spoil things here but you can find links to brackets, YouTube, and Twitch below. In the past, I’ve gathered some basic statistics on ML tournaments. Things like win rate, ace games etc. were useful only to limited degrees. They pointed to the strengths of the seeding system and showed us what factions the top players preferred. This time around, however, JibberJabberJobber has done some excellent work and collected all sorts of data.

I won’t go through it here as it deserves an entire story on its own but you can view all of the statistics in the ML5 brackets by following this link and clicking on the appropriate tabs on the bottom of the page.



Unfortunately, ML5 has lived up to its name. The fifth major ML tournament, “The Finals”, is the last official Master League tournament. Primary organizer and lead caster, A_E, announces here and gives his reasoning behind the decision. The regularly scheduled tournaments and Patreon funding will come to an end but the existing ranking table will remain publicly available, and A_E is by no means stepping away from the community altogether. Additionally, the Master League Discord server will be repurposed to be a hub for community members to organize future events.


The second half of the ML map making competition will continue. Seven maps have been submitted over the past two months and the first tournament featuring them will take place Saturday, June 5th. Later in June show matches with evenly-matched players (not just the best of the best!) will be broadcast on Twitch with some of the community’s best streamers. The Company of Heroes Master League is a community-driven project that showcases CoH’s competitive scene. It features tournaments every two months and is broadcast live on Twitch. The prize pool is funded by members of the community chipping in small dollar amounts every month. By becoming a Patron, anyone can have the chance to vote on a variety of things that affect future tournaments and events via the exclusive Discord channel that brings together fans, players, and the organizers. In addition to the regular tournaments, the Master League is a living history of Company of Heroes. Detailed statistics of past tournaments are documented and results from the twenty most recent events are used to seed players in upcoming tournaments. This is to ensure that the Master League stays as competitive as possible while providing an archive of past achievements.
