"On May 7th the Company of Heroes’ online servers at server hosting company Quazal will be shut down. Details on how to transition your account from Quazal to Steam are here.
Longtime Company of Heroes players will notice some features that are initially missing from the Steam version of the game. We have attempted to preserve as much of the playing experience of Company of Heroes as much as we could, however some features are no longer working as previously shipped. Listed below are features that we are not currently able to offer in Company of Heroes. We understand that the loss of features like your friends’ lists, leaderboards and match arbitration is regrettable and while we’re glad to be able to secure the game’s long term survival on Valve’s Steamworks servers we’re sorry to see those go.
Fortunately, on June 25th Company of Heroes 2 will be launching with many of those features, which will be housed on servers controlled by Relic. Following the launch of CoH 2 we plan to begin reintroducing those features back into the original game, using those same servers. While we can’t yet give a timeline for when these features will be reintroduced to Company of Heroes, our initial priority will be match arbitration, to ensure a trusted environment for our competitive players.
Overall we are enthusiastic about the transition from Quazal servers to Steamworks. The recent performance of the Company of Heroes serves on Quazal has been frustrating for both players and the development team. We are excited that the move will secure the long term future of Company of Heroes. This will help keep the game alive. In an industry where too many companies shut down their online servers after a few years we are extremely proud to have been able to support Company of Heroes for over six years and well into the future.
The main changes are:
• The game now uses your Steam profile and Relic Online has been removed.
• A number of online systems (matchmaking, chat, leaderboards) reworked to use Steam network.
o For example the Whisper command has been disabled in public chat due to system limitation. Whisper still functions in arranged team chat and in-game.
o We disabled a number of leaderboards because they could not be supported due to system limitations
• Automatch map filter no longer works and has been disabled.
• Friends List updated to use Steam friends. Only online Steam friends will be shown.
• Current Company of Heroes friends lists will not be transferred over
• Removed unsupported options from friends list: Add Friend, Remove Friend, Whisper Player. These are now facilitated via the Steam friends list.
• Removed Relic’s post-match arbitration system.
• News Tab - Online Stats not currently not supported due to system limitations.
• Whisper command disabled in public chat due to system limitations. Whisper still functions in arranged team chat and in-game.
• Removed chat commands that are no longer supported: /whisper, /reply, /addfriend, /removefriend, /ignore, /unignore, /ignorelist, /joinfriend
As mentioned we are also looking into preserving the Company of Heroes leaderboards and as many stats as information as we can prior to the shutdown so that we can host them on a website to commemorate the battles that you’ve fought during the game’s life on Quazal.
Over the coming weeks we will be conducting tests on the new servers to help best optimize them. During these tests we may be asking the community to jump online to help us testing our stability on the new backend, and we hope that you’ll join us for these stress tests.
We thank all of you very much for your support of Company of Heroes over the past six years and hopefully well into the future. Everyone at Relic feels incredibly honoured to be able to work with you as a community and on a game as beloved as Company of Heroes."
