Yeah I love this game and all past Relic RTS games, don't get me wrong, but I sometimes feel like I'm playing an early access game.
Part of that is how much work they put into supporting the game; the other half is how nutty the state of the game can be sometimes. March Deployment, for instance. |
Huh. I did notice that I could get a lot more done with an SMG than with any of the bolt rifles.
What's the deal with machine guns? I find that it's pretty easy to snipe the gunner/get sniped if you are the gunner, and that the rifles have so much long range killing potential that the suppression from the MG is not really needed. |
LemonJuice isn't saying that he wants 3x Kubel to be a strong opener in the game, or that it shouldn't be change,d necessarily. He's just pointing out that although it may reflect poorly on balance, it isn't exactly abuse... I mean, the game DOES normally allow people to build 3 of a unit. Being annoying with a spammed unit isn't the same as drop hacking or using a bug in the map. |
Would the commanders actually be different from each other if there were only five of them?
Not big on the fewer commanders idea. Right now it's wonky but I'm pretty sure more than 5 of the Sov and Ost commanders are viable, so the commander bloat still works.
I do wish that it was just USF versus OKW, and OH versus SOV.. but that would split the community. |
If that is the case we ought to call the Maxims, LMG squads if they're gonna be the main attacking force.
I think soviets are doomed to remain a weird faction that relies on HMG spam and sniper spam and stuff like that.
Peter Qumsieh stated in a stream recently that he feels conscripts are currently in a good place so any changes on that account are unlikely, at least I think.
Probably best to just wait for mods for a different take on the faction.
If I get around to it, and if they get around to making mod tools, I want to make a "CoH2: 1944" edition that just adjusts the game to center more around one particular year. So cons get replaced by some sort of soviet riflemen unit, T34-85 is non-doc, replace maxim with a normal HMG, make soviet tiers work like OH tiers, etc. Change up the commanders so that there are only 3-6 for each faction. Well, it's a dream at least.

In 1v1 I find it one of the most annoying units, especially because you can get it without any map control, but as I practice playing against it more, I find I am learning how to just kill its supporting units and let it keep running the OH player's economy. Haven't quite gotten it down but right now I'm feeling it's fine but requires a way different response compared to playing against a regular OH army in 1v1. |
I think your problem with the maxim is that you're using it to support your conscripts, not replace them. Just build like 3-4 maxims and 1-2 cons and things will come together. Maxims aren't great against blobs but they can 1v1 grens quite well, and they cost the same as grens, so why not?
There, I solved both of your issues
An upgrade on cons probably is never going to happen this late. : (
As long as we're floating fantasy ideas, I motion that since cons are NOT supposed to scale, then surely they should become cheaper than grens in late game? I think the soviets should get a research option in their HQ that unlocks late game, where you pay maybe a small amount of munitions or fuel to drastically reduce the cost of conscripts. It's weird having cons cost the same as grens and penals costing even more with such dramatic differences in scaling.

Obviously the community members behavior was inflammatory, but IMO this whole thing stems from the fact that Relic(Brad) is using ranked automatch as a testing ground for balance issues. I'll go ahead and give Brad the benefit of the doubt that he was testing the Kubels performance in a competitive setting(at the cost of an extremely frustrated community member) rather than actively trolling for a reaction, although his comments in the replay thread suggest otherwise.
I guess I could see automatch being a good competitive environment to evaluate a units performance, but when you represent the company (and the specific department) that is responsible for obviously imbalanced(or at the very least extremely frustrating) units, and then you abuse the strength of the unit by both trolling in game and in the replay thread, you're going to come off as both incompetent and rude.
Ah, well, I do see what you mean.
Another, related issue that I think exists in this community, is this notion that if someone uses an "abuse" strat, whether it's too many Kubels, too many snipers, too many maxims, or simply building one ISU, that gives you license to lose your shit at them both in game and then later on the forums or where ever. I understand in this case that there are other rather important factors at work. I just think it'd be nice if we, as a community that is many ways totally awesome, could in someway address this problem rather than just focusing on the Relic stuff, though that is also important.
I got mad before, I guess, because my gut reaction was "wow, a dev trolling me? That's a thousand times more positive than the typical interaction I get in an online RTS!"

Read the whole topic and you will see that people are more angry about him coming to the replay thread and posting the question again to mock his opponent.
I read the whole topic, thank you very much.
Yes, that innocent replay thread, with the replay title that I won't repeat here but I don't use gendered slurs.
I still think it was pretty harmless in that context.

To clarify a little bit, I do think that some of the things bC did were bad, and I think it's a good thing that Relic sent this note out.
On the other hand, it also feels like this is largely a case of butthurt rather than actual harm.
Relic being the employees and us being the customers, I agree that it's more important for them to behave reasonably ... it's their job and we're just playing a game, after all. On the other hand, I don't like how Relic employees misbehaving is being represented as the ONLY problem here, when it is very clear to me, at least, that harassment in general is also an issue. |
Am I the only one who thinks that what Breaking Brad did wasn't all that bad?
I mean, watch some high level games on Propagandacast - full of truck pushing. It's just what people do at higher levels.
In the first few games in question he got a bunch of profanity and the worst he said was "so you think the Kubels are underperforming?" Again, I don't see much of an issue with this.
I agree that saying "GG asshole" at the end of the game with taxman was bad. That definitely was not okay. Otherwise it's mostly a case of him getting harassed by community members, IMHO.
edit:
Just wanted to elaborate a little on why this doesn't sit well with me.
Whenever I play games like this, there's always a torrent of verbal abuse/hate speech and whenever that happens the response is always "get over it noob!" and from how Relic handles enforcement it doesn't seem they care much either. If you're going to take the line that "it's just how things, we won't do anything," that's fine, I guess.
But when you start intervening for any other conduct issue, even if it's a special case like an employee ... eh. So suddenly Relic needs to step in when a balance team member steps on someone's toes with an annoying strategy and a trollish but mostly harmless comment? Bleh. Meanwhile anyone who wants to can pretty much go Full Hitler and say whatever the shit they want. Bleh.
