They seem pretty useful for early mid game at least, especially when you need a flank locked to enemy vehicles because you have sniper mortars lefh and what not

I guess because it's more useful to use that squad's time to cap a point or two than it is to build a big wall of tank traps, which also stop your own tanks. Snipers and so on can be protected by any squad with a snare.

Mostly because there are very few uncrushable chokepoints to tanktrap up. Even when there are, mines are much more effective as they'll snare the tank.

I think also the build time is just too long to make it worth while when you include the vulnerability of units while building. If somebody tries to build them aggressively they rarely get up more than one before they start taking fire and dropping models. If you're building them safely behind the lines you'll likely end up causing more issues for your own units than theirs. A mine you can quickly plop down and move on.
Obviously you don't want traps to be too quick to build so that they get spammed around, but you would probably see them more if knocked down the build time a bit.

They are also the ultimate death traps for infantry hiding behind (normally yours on your side).
Tank drives around for 2 seconds with you not babysitting your infantry squad?
P4 shell right on all 4-6models clumping up behind them.

The same can happen with sandbags though.

Sandbags are slightly more spaced out though. Infantry will step on each others toes behind a tanktrap, while a sandbag is more like a line.
Even a luchs will damage all 4 models behind a tanktrap with its miniscule AoE.
