2. Do not use the ingame benchmark as reference, because it has much more field depth than you are used to play when you use the view-from-above.
3. Try playing in windowed mode:
1) Exit the game if you currently have it open
2) In your Steam Library, right click on the game
3) Click on "Properties"
4) Click on "Set Launch Options" at the bottom
5) copy and paste the following into the text area: -window -lockmouse
(dash, and the word "window", space, dash and the word "lockmouse")
now check if you are experiencing any improvement.
3. If it's still not enough, disabling replay recording has proved to give you a 10-20 fps boost. Follow this guide for reference http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=156776308
Hope it will be useful!

How can disabling replay recording give so much? It's just saving all the commands as text or some related form. No graphics or anything.
same question I asked myself before tryin'. Replay Recording is simply not as performing as in CoH1, but I couldn't say why and how! no official replies from relic about that...
In low-end rigs like mine disabling replay recording results in a boost in performance:
Intel® Core™ i5 3210M Processor
Intel Integrated Graphics HD 4000
8 GB RAM
Keeping AA low, textures high, physics medium and tweaking inside the settings in order to keep shadows but disabling Ambient occlusion file I can run 1vs1 multiplayer matches at avg 35 fps.
Which is more than enough to enjoy the game

edit.
Curiously enough, the performance test gives absolutely horrendous results, but they don't seem to appear in game. The smoke from fires seem to be the biggest culprit for slowdowns.

.... and still though the performance of the game is dissaster.
Has anyone yet got the game running @ 60-100FPS?

This doesn't mean that the game isn't optimized or performance is poor.
It's done so that the game still looks awesome in 3-4-5 years from now.

I have an i5 3570K, 8gb Ram, GTX670 2gb and I can run everything on high apart from image quality on "high" and AA set to low.
It runs between 40 and 60 FPS but if I set AA to medium it drops drastically.
Just interested to see if anyone can get better performance with a simalar rig.

Can anyone actually have the games AA set to anything above low without major FPS loss?

As far as I know, the medium and high AA settings actually renders the game at a higher resolution (1.5x or 2.0x) and then scales the game down to your screen.
This is extremely demanding, and I would not think anyone would get good performance using these AA settings unless they have a radeon 290, gtx 780 or higher.
Basically, if you want AA, stick to the other settings or the AA settings in the Windows control panel for ATI/Nvidia.

I used to run this exact setting with a 6970 which is slower than your 670 by a good margin. If not there's a bigger issue in your system.

Gameplay Resolution: 100%
Image Quality: Higher
Anti Aliasing: Low
V-sync: Off
Texture Detail: High or Higher
Snow Detail: Low
Physics: Low
I was getting normal minimums of 50 fps (sometimes dropping to 30/40 during blizzards and when lots of stuff was going on), maximums of 80 - 90 and averages of around 60 - 70. I used afterburner to log the fps and just looked at the results, didnt work them out or anything. The ingame benchark used to record really crap fps but the game played fine. I have since moved to a 290x and even at stock gives me silly fps (normally over 100 in 2v2 with most settings at max). I will try to record my fps somewhen soon to see what the average is. It might be worth downloading afterburner and using it to log frame rates then dump them into excel to see what your average actually is.
