is matchmaking determined by level or by rank?

I hope this is posted in the correct sub-forum. Please move it if necessary :D

What I mean is that seeing how some factions have a vastly larger player base, there can be quite a significant difference between a player level and the actual rank on a ladder.

For example you would be lvl 11 If you're ranked number 600 for 1v1 ostheer, but only lvl 7 if you had rank 600 and British.

Conversely it would arguably be easier to becomme top 200 as british compared to ostheer meaning that a rank 16 ost player would most likely be better than a rank 16 brit, although I think this difference would be smaller.

So does anyone know what parameters the games matchmaking works with? is it level, ranking or something else entirely?

Best Regards

It's a hidden elo value that gets updated with every match depending on who you win/lose against. AFAIK the ladder rank is given by the elo and the level is just a reflection of the percentile you are in and is not used for matchmaking.

I think I know what you're saying, but just to clarify:
Does that mean that it will try to match a rank 400 ostheer player against a rank 400 allied player regardless of the total amount of players who play that faction, or can it be assumed that the ELO uses some more complex micros that better asses the respective skill of the players beyond their specific ranking for a given faction?

Matchmaking is based on ELO rating. Your rank is your place when players are ordered by ELO. Your level is directly derived from your rank and the total number of people ranked with that faction.

The system will try to match you to the person with the closest ELO searching for the opposite side. Number of games, playtime, etc. do not influence matchmaking.

This will not necessarily correspond completely with rank, for instance an UKF player might have significantly lower ELO than the same rank axis player (low number of players playing low number of games on UKF ladder). How much this is compensated for, only Relic knows.

Here's the most indepth analysis that anyone has done on matchmaking in coh2 if you're interested:
