"After the failed Operation Market Garden, the Allies were left with a salient running across the south-east of the Netherlands. To protect this salient from German attacks and destroy the bridgehead established by the Germans west of the Meuse, the Allies launched Operation Aintree. The U.S. 7th Armored Division was brought to the front to take Overloon, Venray and eventually Venlo. The attack stalled at Overloon with the Americans taking many casualties from a defending force consisting of the 107th Panzer Brigade, Fallschirmjäger and other troops. The Americans were then replaced by the British 3rd Infantry and 11th Armoured Divisions. After a tremendous artillery barrage on the town, the British attacked. The ensuing battle would be referred to by the British as 'the Second battle of Caen' due to its ferocity, and was the largest tank battle on Dutch soil in history."
