SO... new RIG... GTX 780??

So.......

here I am ordering all the parts for my new rig.. all is ordered and then.... they call me and tell me that my GPU - GTX 780 DirectCU II OC - is out of stock.



Now.. they say that they are waiting for a response from ASUS as to know when they will recieve a new batch - so - do you guys think I should wait for the ASUS GTX 780 or maybe order another?

Before all you little kiddies Trolls say *hey, why a 780 - get a 770 instead* then I am getting a GTX 780 because I work for my own money and I CAN.

They have the EVGA GeForce GTX 780 SC ACX - that is also pretty good. But after some reviews then I see that the ASUS DirectCU II OC - OC´s better and higher + you get a nice backplate.


ANY opinions?

AS of now then I would start to mount my RIG all top end products but with a 9500 GT...........

It is the most expensive component of your entire computer, usually, and you want it to be in the best quality possible. Why save all of that money to get it used?

As for the 770 and OC'ing: Overclocking will kill your parts quicker, there's no doubt about that. How fast, no one knows for sure, but it degrades the components faster. You will not get to charge the warranty if you accidentally mess something up overclocking.

If you purchase an overclocked model from ASUS though, you will most likely have a warranty for that, and it is already overclocked. Like you said: You got the money, and you want it. Patience is king.

Overclocking isn't a risk at all. If you want to overclock your hardware, you look for references for other from other people who have overclocked it. This is why some manufacturers have their hardware OC ready and OCing saves you a lot of money.

An i5 2500k you can OC it to stock 2600k with absolutely no harm to it, of course the i5 won't have hyperthreading, but it's still at 3.8-4 GHZ saving you two hundred bucks.

I'm also not trying to deny that overclocking will ware down your hardware faster, but I've clocked my GTX 570 2.5 VRAM to 860MHz and have had no heating problems or any sign of it dying soon for the past 2.5 years.

It can be a risk, fi you don't know what you are doing. What works in a specific configuration may not work in another similar one. His cooling specs may be better. His memory may be better for OCing, PSU, etc. If you OC your system you run with all the risks, even if they never trigger: with an already OCed card he doesn't run the risk, doesn't void the warranty and doesn't have to go into the process of finding the sweet spot for OC. He has the money to spend, and he doesn't seem to mind spending that extra for it. If he's up to it, why not?

There's one last thing: All systems degrade form use. OC'ing degrades them faster, depending on how much you push it, this is a fact all computer systems obey. Some OCing is gentle enough to degrade them very little, so it is insignificant, but some people can push them a lot. Some configurations, especially with bad voltages, little testing and bad cooling, can break the system. If you are careful and use common sense, that probably won't happen, but its up to the individual user's risk to find out.

Even so, if your OC`ing then ofcourse it wears your gear down faster BUT... there is usually no risk at all as byt the time it *dies* on you then it will be long past due its usefulness..

I will both OC the CPU and GPU - custom liquid cooled with 360 rad for the CPU.

Anyone see the other Stock GTX 780? if its in good shape do you think offering 450 euros is worth it?

Where did you get your benchmarks from? Link? Because they look pretty off.

Anyways, it's really not that important which 780 you get, at 1920x1200(or 1080 whichever you run) it will pretty much max out any game anyways, except CoH2 because it runs like shit and doesn't support SLI/Crossfire.


Also @ CombatMuffin. OC'ing doesn't do shit unless you go full retard and let's say use 1.6 volts on a 3570k/3770k. You aren't going to degrade it.

Yeah, for NOW then I will play on 1080p monitor at 120+ hz - but maybe I upgrade to multiple monitors.

So I can get stock GTX 780 but the ASUS OC version overclocks like a dream.... + it runs cooler and has a backplate.
