Hey guys! I'm working on a project to build a UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) with a bunch of UNSW (Uni students from University of NSW) and we'd like your help :)

Our UAV is being built as part of the UAV Outback Challenge Competition, an international competition that is run by QUT and CSIRO. The mission is to autonomously fly our plane from a base to a location 10km away. It will then attempt to locate a person on the ground before landing near him (the accuracy of the GPS coordinates is 100m).

Once landed, the person will insert a "blood sample" into the plane before being able to take off and return to base. All procedures including take off and landing will need to be autonomous.

You can find more information about the competition here.

Our current design is based on the US Military's V-22 Osprey. It has two tiltable engines, will travel at 60 knots (about 110km/h), has a 2.5 metre wingspan and a range of 100 nm with a maximum takeoff weight of 20kg.

We also have a facebook page and a website. Currently we're up to manufacturing the plane and programming the radios and autopilot. Our facebook and website pages will provide news about the project as we continue developing our plane.

What is the material you are planning on using? I have a fair bit of experience designing and building model airplanes and am just curious what part of it requires $4k.

We're planning to use aluminium except because our design has to be fully automated, we have to buy a lot of other electronic components such as autopilots, radios.

Here's the breakdown of our costs.

- Avionics: $2,700
- Propulsion: $2,500 (yes, that includes engines)
- Batteries: $750
- Servo Actuators: $660
- Batteries: 730
- Ground Control: $750
- Airframe: $2,000
Total: $10,090

100 nanometers isn't a very long distance :snfQuinn:

Jokes aside, very cool project - good luck!
