Although I'm not very active anymore, I can say for sure that the current staff is bigger and busier than I can recall at any point. I got my green Writer badge back in the summer of 2013, when there were very few active staff members. Speaking of staff, if you'd like to contribute in any way just contact an orange-level member and let them know you are interested.
As for the community, every news story is not immediately followed by an asinine forum post that just says "first", which basically means that everyone here is pure gold.
