This has been bothering me since the alpha. I don't understand the reasoning behind making health bars and unit icons semi-transparent when deselected, especially when you have maps with a ton of white and blue (winter maps) that completely blend in with the light blue colour of your unit icons/health bars.
I can't count the number of times I've lost squads or accidentally retreated full-health squads because I haven't been able to tell how much health they've had. It's extremely frustrating; at least give us the option to make health bars completely opaque like in vCoH.
Why are health bars semi-transparent?

It's to make it harder to see what's going on. That's the general design philosophy behind the UI and the tracers and blizzards and stuff.

Yeah I agree Inverse.
I am also having major issues recoginizing the placement of my own mines due to transperancy effects. They just are not as obvious like the CoH1 mines.

Agree, sometimes rly hard to find own mines or see if mine is build 100% or not..

The only visibility problems I have are with mines and garrisoned units that are low on health. The icon blocks the bar near the low health end, and I have no idea just how close to death they are with that.
