It's but only if you don't care about people who bought your product.
Millions sold but why so few playing?

It'a all about buidling your own customers for future products.
I belive that 70% who bought CoH2 wont buy for example CoH3 and it's about doing things, so people who bought CoH2 will do it again with CoH3.

Dota2 isn't in this chart and still is the most popular game steam and probably the most profitable.
Because its free and his economical model better.

Well but there must be a reason why the player numbers are so low right ? Just take a look at romes playernumbers and compare them.

"Dear boy?" What's that supposed to mean?

Perhaps you didn't see my elaboration, i edited it in afterwards. What i wrote was:

To elaborate, i don't consider it successful game in any other way but financial. Sure, it probably raked in a lot of cash for relic and/or sega but the fact that the average player only spent a few hours on it is for me not a very good achievement gameplay wise. It means most players didn't care to dig deeper into the game.

I have no idea what the average over all game is but for me personally if i enjoy a game i sink at least 30-50 hours into it. If i play a game for 4 or 7 or 10 hours it means it got old very quickly.

I grew up with a golden era of games that was not made to make shitloads of cash but to be an artistic outlet of the people making them. Games like Monkey Island, Doom, Commander Keen, Deus Ex, Worms, Omikron, Black & White, Thief etc, where made with a different mindset. I understand that the gaming industry has changed and is a completely different thing now. The games are way too advanced to make in your garage and cost way too much money to develop. However, i still don't think that just because a game makes lots of money it automatically should be seen as a great game.

Some of my fondest gaming memories comes from playing mods and they didn't make any money at all.

That's extremely impressive. Unfortunately, for a game like CoH2 that relies so much on microtransactions, player numbers are far more important long-term than simple sales figures, especially since most of those were likely during one of CoH2's many sales.

It's weird that they sold 4 million units but only saw an average daily player increase of around 2000 during that same time. CSGO, on the other hand, sold 6.4 million units and saw an average daily player increase of around 200,000 in 2014. That's 32 sales per average player increase for CSGO vs. 2,000 sales per average player increase for CoH2, though there are obviously many potential reasons for those differences.

Makes sense Relic is making the metamap to keep players stick with the game, as already pointed out - casuals players see little reason to stick with the game. Pity that relic don't care about the hardcore players either so noone is happy :guyokay:

4 million sales, less than 10k stick around, I would consider this a huge failure in making a good game.
