They say it in response to oorah, because of what it is classified in the game files.

Actual gaming experience tells me that they say it in response to Rear Echelon's "Volley" ability.

That is actually quite accurate historicaly (yay Relic?)

From interview with Khrapov Ivan Vasilyevitch (Храпов Иван Васильевич), Soviet sergeant, artilleryman, commander of M-42 crew

- How would you describe the effect of fragmentation shells of 45-mm cannon?

- Weight of fragmentation shell was more than two kilogramms. Imagine what it's like inside stuffed with TNT. Distance travelled by fragments is much greater than that of a hand grenade. They were especially effective against enemy machine-gun points. In principle, the main advantage of the 45-mm gun was that it shoots like a sniper rifle - very accurately. No deviations, because you shoot direct fire. If it is good to aim, then fire a single shot was enough for the destruction of enemy machine guns teams, which consisted of two or three people. There was also a buckshot, which we initially issued. But it somehow did not take, because it had shot distance of only 200 meters. This is useful when the enemy approaches very close, but such situations did not happen, so we refused to use buckshot at all.

- You were used mainly to suppress the enemy machine-gun points?

- Basically, yes. In battle we shot machine-gun and mortar points all the time.

Now you made me dream about shell change akin to ISU/sherman one where we'd have AT shells and AI shells. Damn, then this AT gun would be truly unique and actually useful if it was more effective against inf in some way.

Yeah the M-42 was very accurate, it had a 4x scope if Im not mistaken. What they would do against later war tanks was to conceal themselves, something that is quite easy with the small M-42.
Wait till the enemy tanks are close enough and then fire at the tracks. Being accurate they would knock the threads of, causing the enemy tank swing around and show it's weaker side armour.
And that ofc could be punched through.

Something like Stug E gun, but with more accuracy and much lesser AoE, because otherwise it will wipe ostheer 4-man squads. Yeah, M-42 would be unique and useful.
