If you order them to attack then they just obey your order, which is to eliminate the target and they will do anything to complete that order. Next time, if someone attacks you, you either:
1. Let your troops automatically attack the enemy. Where it's pretty much hold ground and never give it up.
or
2. You tell all your troops to focus fire on one target and hit the stop button. The unit's AI remembers the original target.
The feature you're asking for is something that is not really necessary considering that we have more significant problems like optimisation and balance. After all, you can already tell them to hold ground just by following the methods I provided.
And yes, hold ground is the default functionality of every unit INCLLUDING vehicles. If they chase something then it's the player's problem for ordering it to eliminate the target i.e attack function
Why is there no hold ground button in this game?

This thread is definitely not going to the right direction. If you have problems with your units going after the enemy units you clicked on then you should learn to manage your units better. Press the stop button, it's that simple no need to drag this on at all.
