Watched a bit and found it enjoyable, think I'll check back a bit later to watch the rest. Really interesting to see how it took off and how players pretty much compensated for the UI with more actions per minute.
Also the Starcraft 1 music in the background made me nostalgic.

I wonder how big starcraft would have been had Japanese games not been banned in Korea for such a long time (up until 2004) As well as very few western publishers releasing games officially in Korea.
Another interesting point is that Pro Gaming is considered gambling in Japan and hence illegal. Where there is a crazy competitive arcade scene yet it can't really go far because of financial reasons.
Starcraft's success is more serendipitous rather than smart planning on Blizzard's part.
The following is a long read but it's much better at giving a run down about the growth of the scene

The primary reason for Diablo, Warcraft and Starcraft being successful is that they have a game maker as their top decision maker.
Most companies have a lawyer, accountant or marketing guy at the top.
They adhere to their vision statement of "Gameplay First".
From a financial perspective, Starcraft is their least successful franchise.
All of Blizzard's top people are working on WoW.
The Starcraft guys are the "B team".
The franchise has suffered much more "bad luck" than "good luck".
