I was wondering if anyone else is a fan of using Penals in 1v1 (And I mean not just as counters to say Assgrens, but as your legit main strat), and if so how do you use them effectively?

They are the dedicated bunker/building destroyer. I call them postal battalion because all they do is deliver satchel charges.

2 engies, 2 M3s, 2 penals, guard with 120mm or double guard depending on resources works best for me. Hard part is keeping M3s alife, because I simply love to overextend after getting greedy.

Will have to try with 3 penals and one engi with M3 into guards.
Basically penals cap the map and fight off grens while M3s harass and squadwipe overextended solo grens/pios.

I go for 1 Penal in my opening. Last game I actually continued training more of them in late-game, reaching 4...It seemed like a better controllable army than going snipers, since they're less vulnerable and offer good VP harassment.

Otherwise I've never used them as my main army.

I've used them a few times to quite good effect. They work well against grens spammers, and I like them for being less muni hungry than cons, so guards can be made more useful. A lot of people get caught out by their higher DPS, especially when a few focus fire.

How about you Ivan? Been playing with them?

Haven´t being playing a lot 1v1 and don´t know how effective this BO is (which is mainly what i´m doing on 2v2).

Commander: Guard Motor

-T1
-Con
-M3: straight to cutoff or position i expect to see him capping. Since he has no munition yet for faust, i just go really close.

-Penal

-Penal/CE/Con: depending on how my engagements during the first minutes go or what i´m facing on the board.
-CE. If i already got one before, Penal/Con.

-Guard, 2 specially if i see 222.
-T2: whatever i need
-At some point AT nades if i see T3
-T34-85s

No more than 2 of anything.

Penals with a flamethrower can be wonderful on the right maps (Stalingrad, Semoisky for buildings) and are excellent against Panzergrenadiers.

Penals are quite good to get late game if you lose your conscripts and you're opponent is fielding lots of infantry. The flamethrower they are upgraded with even when unvetted packs a lot more punch than conscripts. And you will usually have AT out by that time.

My favortie commander with penal strat is the Urban defense doctrine, 45mm ATG is simply fantastic vs SC + HT and Stug. Penal I think will win mostly with vanilla gren but MG42 gren just slaughter these guys, any help here?

Flank them like you would any mg. The lmg42 is terrible close range.

So any tips on how to deal with LMG42 spam in "Crossing the woods"? Grens just own everything at that map.

I like my t2 combined arms w/ cons, shocks, maxim, atg into KV8, IS2 on that map. If he is going multiple MGs get a mortar, if he is going multiple grens with LMGSs, get an additional maxim or two. Also, like Daniel said, snipers are insanely good on crossing.

As far as Penals go, I only find myself building them on stalingrad. Due to the massive amount of green cover and close quarters they seem to do well in just about every engagement there. Occasionally I will build one to use w/ a conscript squad if I'm going T1, but I find they provide less utility and only a marginal dps increase from conscripts so they feel pretty niche on most maps. Square peg, round hole.

idk, but penals seems to be a huge step up over vanilla cons in terms of dps. plug them in green cover and they seem to perform nicely at all ranges.

don't they fire alot faster than mosins?

SVTs are a lot better short range then mosins(~32 vs ~17 dps) and mosins deal 0.5 DPS more at max range. Assuming full 6 men squad.

Cons have a lot more utility then penals thou.

Actually the SVT's damage difference compared to the Mosin at medium range is negligible. At long range they're slightly less effective, but you shouldn't be using them nor Conscripts at long range anyway. At Close range though the SVT's DPS far outshines the Mosin.

There is a time to use cons (or penals) at max range. And that's simply just holding ground in green cover so grens can't advance. Although the grens will eventually out DPS you, it's the buying time which is worth staying in green cover for, regardless of range.

Not everything boils down to DPS.
