Osttruppen Reserves - what's the point?

Hi

Maybe some of you can explain it to me?

A normal Osttruppen squad is 200 Manpower and for Osttruppen Reserves (2 Osttruppen squads) you pay 500 Manpower and then there's a chance of some veterancy. A) 200 Manpower for one Osttruppen squad and that's quite steep, B) so we pay 50 Manpower for veterancy on a very weak unit which we C) MAY get, and D) we have to pay for pairs of squads.

Isn't this by far the most inefficient ability/unit cost-wise?

Its worthless unless you get really lucky, I'd rather spend my manpower elsewhere.

If you get the LMG, it's a real boon. Otherwise, meh, with vet they are okay and you get two more capping squads with decent dps. I'd probably only risk it vs soviet sniper strats or if i'm already ahead in a game.

There is also a chance they spawn with an LMG42, which makes them quite decent.
I would love it if they added in more random weapons to these units, like a chance to get a panzerschrek or a pair of G43s or some MP44s.

I find that I use this when I need a unit for capping and is relatively versatile latter in the game. The veterancy and the possible lmg42 lets them actually be useful when they appear.

Try it when you need to take points under fire from a ISU152. They can be lost and save you more expensive infantry as you hold the line.

Still very situational, I would rate it as a mediocre ability. Not great, but not terrible.

They're not that bad. The extra 100 mp is worth it for the chance at getting LMGs and Vet 2 or 3 squads. It's great for filling out your army when you're waiting for Pumas. Having cheap reinforce squads for MGs and PaKs is nice and having disposable faust units are good as well.

Waste of MP. Safer to just spend it on two grens and pay 60 muni for an LMG if you need inf and some AI.

I actually like to call them in, if there are a lot of decrewed weapons on the field. Last game I could get a Maxim and a Zis very fast.

The ability would be perfect if at least vet2 was guaranteed on one of the squads. Vet2 osttruppen aren't half bad and if you have luck and get one with LMG they become beasts.

It is expensive but there's the time factor. You get two squads instantly and you don't have to wait to BUILD two of them. If you have a decrewed Pak, mortar, etc. you can get people on them instantly without retreating a regular 4-man squad.

Yeah 2 squads instantly at the right moment can be a game saver, I find this ability pretty good but im not a huge fan of the lottery part of it. I love the idea behind it though!

I think it would be interesting if they appear with other weapons. Right now they are generally like meh, for the time they arrive.

I think it's pretty good, it has its benefits and trade-offs. It's honestly what "Relief Infantry" always should have been, instead of the current "play very badly for this ability to work" thing it has going.

Ostruppen are actually pretty tanky in Green cover, they're good at holding territory so long as you don't use them to attack positions directly.

I like it, as I use it to quickly re-man my support weapons, add reserves behind them, or cap. The fact that they are big squads also helps a lot.

There is a 100 MP max price premium but this is more than offset by its timely benefits IME.

+1. This is why they are only good with long range weapons. Maybe they could get away with G43, but then they don't drop so u have no chance of moving the weapon to a gren, like with an LMG.
