Screen resoultion

I have always had a 16:9 monitor. But I would think different resolutions will help you in different ways. A widescreen monitor with a ratio like 21:9 could let you see more of the battlefield side to side. A square ratio like 4:3 may let you see more top to bottom, but less side to side, etc. There is a streamer here that runs 21:9 streams once in a while you can check out.
You could test this yourself by changing your game resolutions to different ratios. Remember the screen will not be made for these resolutions, so the picture may be weird looking and blurred. but it will show you how much more/less of the game play area you will see at those ratios.
Full HD is 1920x1080 pixels and 16:9 ratio. 4k is double that resolution at 3840x2160 pixels and is still 16:9 ratio. You will see the same amount of game/map area. It will just look sharper.
What 4K brings you over Full HD is:
- Less need to run anti-aliasing.
- much better detail in textures.
- slower FPS (unless you trade Anti-aliasing).
AA - In order to get rid of jagged edges on objects, you need to run anti-aliaising. AA, paints extra smoothed/averaged pixels along edges to give them a more realistic smooth edge. There are many AA modes and each has trade offs for killing FPS. Running higher res such as 4k, means edges look smoother just because there are more pixels, so you dont need to run as heavy AA or even any at all.
TEXTURE DETAIL- When your videocard paints a wall/floor/etc on the screen. It calcs the angle it is rotated to your eye. If there are not enough pixels on the screen to draw the whole texture, the card will use a smaller blurred copy of the texture. Running high res like 4K, lets the videocard use more full resolution textures and the result is a lot more detail and sharpness. To see what games look like without running smaller blurred textures (MIP MAPPING) see any game written to run without videocards and watch the pixels at angles dance around like your LSD has not worn off yet.

Thank you very very much for the response - very informative

It gives you a lot of stuff to see on the sides. I like it a lot.

this is from a very wide screen, just compare it to full HD.\

Seems like a lot more - should help in gameplay imo. The only drawback may be longer time to reach righthand buttons in the bottom right corner and click with right hand, or maybe I'm wrong?

Wikipedia says that ratio is 43:18. Which is very close to 21:9.
43:18 = 3440/1440 = 2.388888
21:9 = 2.3333

Gunthers image is 1440. 3440 x 1440 pixels according to IMGUR.

Just realised For graphic card such resolution might be a bit heavy in other games. But yeah, up-down map view is identical to full so pointless to add any more pictures I guess Would be nice if some top players wrote what res they use in gameplay.

I had a 16:10 1080p monitor and I bought a 16:9 1440p monitor, with the first a could see more.
This is 1440p

As others already said you won't see more because of the resolution. Only the ratio has an impact.

Thanks. Confirms everything. How about playing with this res? Did you notice any performance drops or different mouse performance, etc?

This is a good question. More pixels = slower FPS. 4k = 4 HD screens so you would expect 1/4th the frame rates. But there are a lot of things that affect the FPS, so it is not an equal ratio. Especially in COH2, which seems CPU heavy.
When I went from 1080 to 4K, I upgraded my videocard as well. But I still run 1080 95% of the time. Going from a GeForce 1060 3GB to a GeForce 1070ti 8GB made almost no difference in FPS for me. But I think I am a special case (as always). Most top streamers are running GeForce 1080.
When reading reviews about videocards, most call the GeForce 1060 an 1080P card. Saying you need more than this speed to play above 1080p resolutions. I am not sure about AMD cards, but I would guess an RX570 is similar to Geforce 1060? RX580 is probably more like a 1070? Maybe need to get into a VEGA series to match a GeForce 1080?
There are several posts in this site where people give their system specs.
Here is a great place to start (even though its a little long in the tooth):

Another anecdote, when running Windows 8, the OS had no issues when changing resolutions for HD to 4K and back. I usually run 60Hz refresh rate. But Windows 10 loses its mind, and I have to dig thru settings to return the refresh rate to 60, every time I change the resolution. Win10 switches my 1080/60 setting to 1080/30 when I come back from 4k. And it likes to make the 4k monitor run at 50Hz. Win10 sucks. Bad. Like really bad. Going back to Win8 soon

I've been runnig the game on gtx1070 stock oc for like 2 years now. I feel 1440 screen would be optimal (especially thinking of other games). But now I got interested in Gunther's resolution as it looks cool. I know quite a lot about coh2 performance and read the threads You suggest (I played the game on gtx470/gtx660/gtx770 and was ok). I hope that on those higher resolutions I won't need antyaliasing. Those wider screens seem to be nice.

It still does not make me a great player, but I like it a lot.
As mentioned before, you do not need this high resolution for it, just the aspect ratio.

No, it plays just fine, but I have a decent PC.

Mine is quite similar but older i7 3770/1070oc/16ram/ssd
I guess it should be similar

You shouldn't have a problem at 1440p with this specs. Just turn down AA (i have it on Low) and VSync off (the game does stutter when its on).
It's because of the bad optimization, COH2 is famous for that sadly

Even with wide aspect you think? That will be almost 4k. I'm a bit scared of other games with widescreen 1440. Or maybe I'm wrong?

Everything depends on the game itself. Some games run very smooth, some others don't. Game optimazation and game engine is the key here.
Example, Doom 2016 has great graphics and runs very smooth, even with mid range GPUs. Same with BF 1 and BF V.
On the other hand games like Crysis 3 or The Witcher 3 (which are older games) need a strong GPU to get 60 FPS (smooth gameplay).
Go to Youtube ( or google) and search for test this your GPU and the resolution you want. That will help you get a better picture.

You're right and I sort of know that. I still have the dillema though
